Employement Insurance in Germany

Almost without exception German law views employees as particularly in need of pratection, because they rely on their ability to work in order to secure a living. This is why employees are as a matter of principle "automatically" covered in all five branches of social insurance. This is almost always a matter of statutory insurance. This immediately takes effect upon starting a job. They can also not be side-stepped by agreements or contracts between employer and employee.
There are, however, some exceptions, for marginal or temporary jobs, for example. There is another special arrangement in health insurance.

The job holder - with few exceptions - does not have to take care of insurance coverage on his own. But he has to decide which health insurance company he wants to be insured by. The employer calculates social insurance contributions, deducts the employee's contribution from salary and pays the collected contributions.

The employer also registers his employees at the chosen health insurance company at the beginning of employment. At the same time this also functions as the central contact point for long-term care, pension and unemployment insurance. They also receive the contributions for these insurance branches from the employer. Only the contributions far accident insurance is settled directly with the employers liability insurance associations.
